Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover

In 1950, the Music of Man archive was founded in Switzerland by ethnomusicologist Professor Dr Wolfgang Laade. Wolfgang Laade had a unique goal - his private collection would document the world's music in its original social and cultural setting. He aimed to present the music in a context free from the widespread dualism and hierarchy popular in academia (west vs. non-west, art music vs. popular music, popular traditions vs. authentic traditions, etc.) Over 50 years, he collected approximately 45,000 audio recordings, 8,700 books and magazines, 2,850 video cassettes and 245 instruments from all over the world. He created a collection with international prestige, exceptional variety and of remarkable historical dimension.

In 2003 the Niedersachsen Stiftung (Lower Saxony Foundation) bought the Music of Man archive, in support of the recently founded Studienzentrum Weltmusik (Study Centre for World Music) at the University of Music and Arts Hannover (HMTH). The collection provides an extensive material basis for research and teaching at the university, and is also intended for the use of the general public.

The main items in the collection are LPs, singles and shellac discs, of mainly non-European music or of productions which do not exist in other European archives and libraries. As well as commercial recordings from Morocco, Corsica, Australia and Oceania, the archive also contains Wolfgang Laade's personal field recordings from India and Sri Lanka, and represent his life's work as an ethnomusicologist.

With the acquisition of the Music of Man archive, HMTH became the owner of the most extensive ethnomusicological collection held by a German university.
